Indanthrone Blue is classified as an organic vat pigment. It is a rich, deep blue with a subtly warm undertone. It has a transparent quality, making it excellent for glazing techniques with a non-granulating texture in watercolor applications.
Indanthrone was originally developed as aΒ vat dyeΒ in the early 20th century by German chemical companies (aroundΒ 1901). Vat dyes were known for exceptional fastness properties on textiles. Later, it was adapted as a pigment for artist paints and industrial applications, becoming available to artists primarily in theΒ mid-to-late 20th century.
